Travel guide

What should your baby sleep in when staying away from home?

Choose the safest suitable sleep space first, then minimise luggage within that constraint. Confirm every approval, age limit and accommodation promise before travelling.

Age guidance

How the decision changes by stage

birth to 5 months

For the first six months, keep the baby in a clear, firm and flat sleep space in the same room as you. An approved carrycot can reduce luggage, but only when the exact model and configuration are explicitly approved for overnight sleep.

6 months to 11 months

A lightweight travel cot offers certainty when accommodation equipment is unknown. A confirmed hotel cot can be easier for luggage-heavy trips, but inspect it before use and keep the cot clear.

1 year to 1 year, 11 months

For a mobile toddler, check the cot's age, weight and escape limits as well as the mattress and frame. Booking a hotel cot became the easiest solution for our later trips.

2 years to 2 years, 11 months

An accommodation-provided cot is often the simplest option at this stage, provided it is genuinely reserved, remains suitable for the child and passes an arrival check.

What matters most

What to compare before buying

Keep the safe-sleep rules the same away from home

Use a firm, flat mattress that fits the cot, place the baby on their back and keep the sleep space clear of pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, soft toys and loose items. For the first six months, the safest place is a separate cot or approved infant sleep space in the same room as you.

Confirm an accommodation cot rather than merely requesting one

Contact the hotel before travelling and ask whether the cot is reserved for your stay, what type it is, what mattress is supplied and whether sheets are included. On arrival, check the frame, mattress fit, cleanliness and condition before putting the child down.

Do not add a different mattress to make a travel cot softer

Use only the mattress and bedding permitted by the product or accommodation instructions. A mattress should be firm, flat and fit without unsafe gaps; extra padding can change the way the sleep product was designed to be used.

A carrycot needs explicit overnight approval

Our Bugaboo carrycot worked as an early overnight option, but approvals vary even within one brand. Some current Bugaboo carrycots and stand combinations are approved for overnight sleep, while other Bugaboo models are not. Check the exact model, configuration, surface and age or weight limit.

Test noisy access before the first night

The Deryan's zip could wake our daughter when she was sleeping lightly. Practise opening, closing and placing the baby into any enclosed cot before relying on it, especially where a zip, popper or floor-level transfer may disturb them.

Reuse familiar sleep cues

A familiar, correctly fitted sleeping bag and the white-noise machine already covered in MiniYears's Sleep guidance can make an unfamiliar room feel more predictable. Continue to match clothing and sleeping-bag warmth to the room temperature.

Treat a phone monitor as optional support

A two-device monitoring app may reduce luggage, but it depends on spare hardware, charging, permissions, connectivity and reliable notifications. We did not use one, so this is a possible convenience rather than a family-tested recommendation or a replacement for checking the child.

Options to compare

3 options from the MiniYears guide

Best lightweight own-cot option

Deryan Travel Cot Baby Luxe

A floor-level pop-up travel cot with fine mesh, a supplied mattress and a compact circular carry format.

  • Current listed weight 1.8 kg
  • Current listed age range Birth to 2.5 years
  • Packed dimensions 36 × 7 × 36 cm
  • Setup Pop-up system
  • Visibility and airflow Fine mesh around the enclosure
  • Insect protection Integrated mesh smaller than 1 mm
  • Included sleep surface Use the supplied mattress and cover as instructed
  • Main compromise Still another item to carry; floor-level transfer and zip noise
Our experience

It was relatively lightweight and gave our daughter a contained floor-level space that she could not roll out of. The mesh made her visible, allowed airflow and kept insects out. It was not weightless in a luggage-heavy trip, and closing the zip sometimes woke her when she was sleeping lightly.

Best for an early trip

Pram carrycot approved for overnight sleep

The baby's familiar carrycot can avoid a separate cot only when the exact product and configuration are approved for overnight sleeping.

  • Approval Must be explicit for the exact carrycot and setup
  • Best for Young baby still within the carrycot limits
  • Surface Firm, horizontal, level and dry as instructed
  • Stand Use a compatible approved stand where required
  • Familiarity Same sleep space used during pram outings
  • Luggage advantage Can remove the need for a separate cot
  • Main compromise Short useful age range and model-specific rules
Our experience

We used our Bugaboo carrycot for some early overnight stays and found it a convenient way to avoid carrying another sleep product. That experience should not be generalised to every pram bassinet: some are approved for overnight sleep and some are explicitly not.

Easiest for later trips

Hotel or accommodation-provided cot

Reserve a cot before travelling, confirm what is supplied and inspect the complete setup when you arrive.

  • Booking Confirm the cot directly with the accommodation
  • Best for Luggage-heavy trips and later baby or toddler stays
  • Mattress Check that it is firm, flat, clean and fits without gaps
  • Frame Inspect stability, locks and visible damage
  • Bedding Ask what is supplied and use only suitable permitted bedding
  • Luggage advantage No cot to carry
  • Main compromise Quality and availability vary by accommodation
Our experience

Later on, we deliberately booked hotels that offered a cot. This was much easier because travelling abroad already involved so much equipment, and removing one bulky item from the luggage made a meaningful difference.

Decision summary

Which overnight sleep setup should you choose?

Choose the safest suitable sleep space first, then minimise luggage within that constraint. Confirm every approval, age limit and accommodation promise before travelling.

  • Use an approved carrycot for an early trip

Choose the familiar pram carrycot when the exact model and configuration are explicitly approved for overnight sleep and the baby remains within its limits.

  • Bring the Deryan for certainty

Choose your own lightweight enclosed cot when destination equipment is uncertain or insect mesh and a known setup justify carrying it.

  • Reserve the hotel's cot to reduce luggage

Choose accommodation-provided equipment when the cot can be confirmed in advance and inspected on arrival.
